Julie B. Rubenstein
Julie is a first-chair trial lawyer with a focus on complex commercial litigation. With 15 years of BigLaw and boutique experience, Julie has shown time and again her ability to outmaneuver, outwit, and outwork her opposition. Trusted to handle cases across a diverse set of jurisdictions and industries, Julie ensures her clients achieve the best possible outcome, be it at summary judgment, in settlement, or at trial.
Most recently, Julie was lead trial counsel to plaintiff MabVax Therapeutics—a now-bankrupt cancer research and development company—in a financial fraud case in San Diego Superior Court that resulted in a confidential mid-trial settlement.
Julie, along with Firm founding partner Andrew George, also served as trial counsel to former Redskins running back Clinton Portis in a criminal healthcare fraud case in the Eastern District of Kentucky. The trial, in which the federal government alleged a scheme by NFL players to defraud a health reimbursement plan, resulted in a hung jury for Mr. Portis.
Julie also has litigated high-stakes IP and business tort cases. She helped secure a defense verdict for Facebook in a Texas federal jury trial where plaintiffs sought $6 billion in damages based on alleged use of their intellectual property related to virtual-reality gaming technology. Across the country in Los Angeles Superior Court, Julie and her team obtained a defense jury verdict for the N.C.A.A. related to sanctions against the University of Southern California concerning football player Reggie Bush. Trial judge Frederick Shaller called the advocacy in the case “the best I’ve seen since I’ve been a judge.”
In the area of securities litigation, Julie’s experience includes a jury verdict in favor of client Liberty Media Corp. in a Section 10(b) securities fraud trial against Paris-based media and telecommunications conglomerate Vivendi Universal, S.A. By the time of trial, her team developed complex financial evidence in Europe, Africa, and throughout the U.S. The four-week Southern District of New York trial culminated in a unanimous plaintiff’s jury verdict for her client, with judgment entered in the amount of €944 million. Julie's pre-trial victories include the successful defense of accounting firm Grant Thornton LLP in a Rule 10b-5 securities fraud class action case which alleged $1 Billion in damages, and settled for $10 Million on the eve of trial. Julie and her team achieved similar success by securing summary judgment on behalf of a former executive of Pfizer, Inc. in a Section 10(b) securities fraud class action.
For these and other successes, Julie is honored to be a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America, which recognizes “excellence among American litigation and trial counsel.” Julie also serves on the Pro Bono/Public Interest Committee of the Washington Council of Lawyers.
